Poor Me - A Different Perspective - May 31

Poor Me

by Berni Dymet

Deuteronomy 15:11 Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, "Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land."

I was watching a home renovation show on cable TV the other weekend. And the subject was bathrooms.

Now it's nice to have a nice bathroom. Sure. I have a nice bathroom.

But on this show - they had chandeliers and all different kinds of marble and gadgets and TVs and highlight fancy wallpaper and - it was unbelievable. And the cost….astronomical.

Bathrooms for goodness sakes!

And I couldn't help but think about the 25,000 kids that'll die today for the lack of some food and clean water.  The worse that gets, the more the wealthy try to cocoon themselves - let's be honest with ourselves - in luxury.

When is enough, enough? When do we look at the poor through the eyes of God? At what point do the wealthy make sacrifices - I mean real sacrifices - sacrifices that really cost something - for those kids?

Do you ever think that? Does it ever kind of hit you that perhaps - I don't know, maybe we're missing the point?
