Laziness is not Rest

by Berni Dymet

Prov. 20:4The lazyperson does not plough in season;  harvest comes, and there is nothing to be found.

There have been times in my life when frankly, I’ve felt like tossing the towel in.  I’d been working so hard that it had worn me down.  Ever felt like that?

You look at it and think – why don’t I just give all this away?  Why don’t I sell up, find a quiet hamlet somewhere, grow my own vegetables and lead a hermit kind of existence.

Or some people – in countries that have a social safety net – go on unemployment benefits.  I know of families that are third and fourth generation unemployed.

So – every now and then we’re kind of tempted to give up, I guess, because we need a rest.

But you know what I’ve discovered – being lazy isn’t the answer.  I tried a couple of times.  It’s just not fulfilling.  It’s hollow, it’s empty.

Turns out that rest – the sort at least that God talks about – that sort of rest is something we’re meant to find right in the middle of the lives we’re living.

It’s kind of counterintuitive.
