Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, "You are a God who sees"… Genesis 16:13

Hagar was an outcast servant girl, pregnant by her master Abram. Out in the desert, Abram no longer watches over her, but the desperate slave encounters the One whose eyes count. She is no theologian, and calls God by the way she understands Him—El Roi. Her encounter with God-Who-Sees teaches us much. When we are in desperate solitude—as was Hagar—His eyes are on us. God lays out the future of Hagar’s descendants, showing that God-Who-Sees-Us enables us to see. He sees all His creation, but El Roi has a special eye for His covenant children.
