William Charles Poole was born in Easton, Maryland. Converted at age 11, he was ordained to the Methodist ministry at 25, and served churches in the Wilmington Conference for 35 years. Encouraged by Charles H. Gabriel, Poole began writing Gospel song texts. Familiar hymns which he wrote include "Just When I Need Him Most, " "Sunrise" and "The Church by the Side of the Road."
