Elihu Burritt was born in New Britain, Connecticut. Apprenticed to a blacksmith, he developed a longing to read the scriptures in their original languages, which he succeeded in doing on his own. Because of this he was known as "The Learned Blacksmith." He became editor of a Christian magazine and a champion of peace movements.
