One of the best known theologians of all time, John Calvin, was born this day at Noyen, France. Although a layman, this Bible scholar became the leading preacher and the dominant force in Geneva, Switzerland. He was the chief builder of the Presbyterian way of thought and church life through his Institutes and Bible commentaries. Long criticized for his stern theology, today he is winning new appreciation although his doctrine of predestination is often modified.
