The key to living in spiritual harmony

September 23, 2015

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed – not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence – continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. - Philippians 2:12-13

Early on in his life, the famous American photographer Ansel Adams showed quite a bit of promise as a classical pianist. One evening at a party, however, Adams played a rather interesting rendition of Chopin’s Nocturne in F Major.

He recalled, “In some strange way, my right hand started off in F-sharp major while my left hand behaved well in F major. I could not bring them together. I went through the entire nocturne with the hands separated by a half-step.”

The next day, a friend of Adams gave him a very honest review of his performance. “Ansel,” he said, “You never missed a wrong note!”

Oftentimes in life, we can feel like things just aren’t harmonizing the way they should. We go to church and we play one key, but then we go home and play another. It’s like we can’t get the spiritual life and the practical life to sync up!

The truth is there’s always going to be a degree of discord between what we preach and what we practice. But as we work out our salvation daily, that discord becomes smaller and smaller.

Seek a life of harmony, each day striving by God’s power to practice what you preach. When you start playing the spiritual and the practical in the same key, your life will become a beautiful masterpiece testifying to God’s greatness!
