God of Israel

Today's reading: 1 Samuel 5:1-12

After the Philistines capture the ark of the covenant, they are introduced and subsequently learn, in a painfully direct way, about the deity and power of the God of Israel. What I found odd was that the result of God displaying His power, might and control in the presence of the Philistines, was fear and rejection (send the ark back and get it out of our country) rather than recognizing God as the one and true living God.

What did you learn about God from the Philistine’s encounter with the ark of the covenant? What did this chapter reveal about how people can perceive God and the things taking place around them? Tami
