Creation of the Beat

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?  Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!  Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone—while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?” –Job 38:4-7

THINK
Like so many things, music can be something that we may not put a lot of thought into about where it came from and why.  But think about the first song or the first rhythmic beat.  That must have been an awe-inspiring moment.

In this verse from Job we recognize that God is the creator of not only the universe and everything in it, but of music too. Yes, that priceless gift of music. But why did He find it necessary to give us this gift? Think about how music can move us and sooth our soul. Just the rhythm of a drum beat can touch parts of your brain that make it react in various and curious ways.  Research shows that music releases a number of chemicals in our brain that can provide contentment, pain relief, alertness, stress management and other soothing and comforting effects.

It’s interesting to think that the antithesis of these emotions can be the very thing that distances us from a relationship with God.  How special to realize that this gift of music was given to us as a tool to help us draw closer to Him. When we listen to music we can’t help but respond to the beat. In a very similar way, when we listen to God, we can’t help but to respond to Him in praise.

PRAY
Take time to thank God for giving you a gift that will help you draw closer to Him.  Ask Him to help you not to overlook it or underutilize it.

ACT
Take some time to put on some of your favorite music, sit back, close your eyes, and relax.  Notice your mood before and after you do this.  Now thank God for His gift.
