Jonathan Swift wrote in 1699, "Vision is the art of seeing the invisible." It was a vision to reach the unreached that sent Dr. John Geddie to the people of Aneityum in the New Hebrides Islands. Today a stone tablet bears testimony of Geddie's faithfulness for 24 years of service to these people who needed to hear the gospel:
When he landed in 1848, there were no Christians.
When he left in 1872, there were no heathen.
Geddie had a vision, a dream, and he gave his life to fulfill it. He was just one man.
But not all people look at the future with such expectancy. I came across an advertisement containing quotations that illustrate that, sometimes, people are not quite able to see into the future with imagination:
"Everything that can be invented has been invented." -Charles H. Duell, director of the U.S. Patent Office, 1899
"Who the ____ wants to hear actors talk?" -Harry M. Warner, head of Warner Brothers Pictures, 1927
"Babe Ruth made a big mistake when he gave up pitching." -Tris Speaker, baseball player, 1921
It's a good thing people didn't listen to these prophets. I have to wonder what visions and dreams lie buried, forgotten and dismissed today because those who have them are not willing to think of what could be rather than what is.
When was the last time you had a vision for the future? A dream of change, of radical departure from the norm?
And let me be more specific: When was the last time you spent enough time with the Lord to glimpse how He could work through you?
If we as Christians have a direct relationship with the Creator of heaven and earth (and we do), then shouldn't we be the most innovative and creative people on earth? Listen carefully to the words of Paul: "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them" (Eph. 2:10).
Ask God what He wants you to do with your life. Ask Him if you are becoming the person He wants you to be.
Discuss: What would you do if you knew you could not fail? Share an idea, a dream, a desire that you've always dreamed of doing.
