Same Is Not the Enemy

For Jesus doesn’t change — yesterday, today or tomorrow.  - Heb. 13:8

Billions of dollars are spent by advertisers every year to tell me one thing: be discontent and dissatisfied with your life. It doesn’t matter if I’m making minimum wage or mega money, the message is that “more”, whatever it is, newer and better, is around the corner and waiting. And so I chase “it” just as long as it is new and it makes me feel new. I buy things I don’t need with money I don’t have to impress people I don’t even like. New is the hero and same is the villain.

I hear the guy that does all the commercials ringing in my head. You know him, he starts convincing us by asking the same question over and over. “Aren’t you tired of your old broom, dish soap, TV tray, acne medicine, diet plan, weed wacker?” This is the hook and I’m the largemouth bass.

Porsche dealers, adult book stores, Sharper Image — even your local marriage counselor — are all in business and going strong because of men’s insatiable bent toward “new.” This mentality corrodes and eventually erodes our satisfaction with what God has called us to keep, cultivate and be thankful for.

What would happen if more of us would risk:

Contentment over consumption — satisfaction over searching for more — more gratitude over meaningless gratification — resting in what we have over restlessness in what we lack — connecting with the Joneses over competing with them — giving more money to God’s work over getting a new toy-careers for cause — having less on earth and more in heaven?

Father, help me be content with what you want for me.
