Believe the Best in Others
Twyla Betha

Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening].
–1 Corinthians 13:7 (Amplified Bible)

God loves you and God loves people. He is all about relationships, and He wants us to have better relationships with others as well. But in order to have better relationships with people, we have to grow more in His love.

We are to love others the same way that God loves us (John 15:12). The part of love I’m talking about today is the part where you believe the best in every person. You can love more like God when you look at people through eyes of love. You start looking for the best qualities in a person. You begin to focus more on who God says they will be tomorrow versus who you see they are today. That’s what believing the best in someone is all about… seeing the person for what they could be in God and believing the best of a person even when they do something wrong.

That’s why we shouldn’t “write people off” so quickly. Even when we encounter not-so-good behavior from Christians, we can still believe the best! I always try to repeat this to myself in situations like these: “In the midst of this person saying or doing wrong, I will believe that if they have a heart towards God or fix their heart towards God, they will change.”

And I don’t have to be the one to change them! You can free yourself if you let people grow at their own pace and don’t try to correct others when you see their faults or flaws. Believe the best in the person… and pray for them that they will get it right, while loving them right where they are.
