IN MY DISTRESS

Read: Jonah 2

Key Verse: “In my distress I called to the Lord, and He answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry.” - Jonah 2:2

What type of distress have you been experiencing lately? A spouse who is distant? Bills that exceed the amount in your bank account? A dream that has yet to materialize? A career that has far less impact than you desire? Bombarded with guilt, shame, and regret? We all face situations that humble us and reveal our need for God. You were made to depend on God and your heart will not be content until you are close with Him. Jonah was inside the belly of the fish because he was outside of God’s will.

Crying out to God can include: 1) Being more honest with Him about your situation and how you arrived in that place 2) Repentance and a willingness to follow God at any cost. 3) Receiving His help (this is often the most difficult step for people who are used to attempting to be self-sufficient). 4) Listening to His voice as He restores, redirects, and refreshes. Your greatest help comes when you open up your heart to God and plead for His strong assistance. No distress is beyond God’s reach or ability.
