The Corinthians and the Macedonians

by Berni Dymet

2 Cor. 8:1-6 We want you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace of God that has been granted to the churches of Macedonia; for during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For, as I can testify, they voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their means, begging us earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this ministry to the saints and this, not merely as we expected; they gave themselves first to the Lord and, by the will of God, to us, so that we might urge Titus that, as he had already made a beginning, so he should also complete this generous undertaking among you.

The Apostle Paul, he makes me wince sometimes with his directness. 2 Corinthians Chapter 8 - he's writing to the wealthy church in Corinth. He tells them about the Macedonians who frankly were poor as church mice.

In fact, Paul's writing a fundraising letter. True - it's in the Bible, check it out for yourself. And the nub of what he's saying is this - Look at the Macedonians you wealthy Corinthians - during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. They gave voluntarily according to their means, and even beyond their means, begging us earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this ministry to the saints.

See Paul's rubbing the wealthy and no doubt selfish Corinthian's noses in the sacrifice of the Macedonians - and then, then he goes on to challenge them to match the generosity of the Macedonians.

Hmm. I wonder if there isn't something in there for you and for me.
