4 A generation goes and a generation comes , But the earth [1]remains forever . 5 Also, the sun rises and the sun sets ; And [2]hastening to its place it rises there again. 6 [3] Blowing toward the south , Then turning toward the north , The wind continues [4]swirling along ; And on its circular courses the wind returns . 7 All the rivers [5]flow into the sea , Yet the sea is not full . To the place where the rivers [5]flow , There they [5]flow again . 8 All things are wearisome ; Man is not able to tell it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing , Nor is the ear filled with hearing .

Commentary on Ecclesiastes 1:4-8

(Read Ecclesiastes 1:4-8)

All things change, and never rest. Man, after all his labour, is no nearer finding rest than the sun, the wind, or the current of the river. His soul will find no rest, if he has it not from God. The senses are soon tired, yet still craving what is untried.
