A Strange Place for Proof

When the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.(Acts 16:27)

The Philippian jailor has a wonderful testimony of saving grace, and his question, "What must I do to be saved?" has been asked by millions over the past 2,000 years.  In sermons, the question has surely led to Gospel presentations which have seen myriads and myriads come to Christ.

But hidden within this story is another proof of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The jailer was a Roman guard, and a guard would lose his life if he lost his soldiers.  This was the Roman way!  Many skeptics, in the day of the resurrection up to our day, claim that someone came and stole the body from the tomb.  Rest assured that no Roman guard would allow this to happen, and certainly wouldn't give such a testimony if it did happen. Their lives would have been at risk!

So the jailer from Philippi asked a great question, but also gives another subtle proof of the resurrection of our Lord.

In His Grace,
Dr. Randy White
