Rejoicing to Suffer

“So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.” (Acts 5:41-42; NASB95)

This passage of scripture is foreign to modern Western Christianity.  We take every measure to avoid suffering, whether for Jesus or anyone else for that matter!  On television, so-called Evangelists consistently proclaim a “health, wealth, and prosperity” gospel that teaches that the faithful will be blessed with all measure of physical blessing.  Suffering, for this false gospel, would be a sign of spiritual weakness.

The Apostles had just come from a near-death experience, saved by the counsel of Gamiliel, they were “just” flogged for preaching, teaching, and making disciples.  Rather than go home and be quiet, they “kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.”  The very activity that got them in trouble in the first place!

How much are you willing to put at risk for the sake of being obedient to the Gospel of Christ?  Would you put your reputation at risk?  Your Job?  Your financial well-being?  Your health?  Your life?

I pray that we never have to suffer for His name.  America was built upon liberties that were designed to avoid such suffering.  I also pray, however, that if you or I are ever called upon to suffer shame for His name, we would be found worthy.

In His Grace,
Dr. Randy White
