Word for the World devotionals from Dr. Randy White

Led by the Spirit

They passed through the Phrygian and Galatian region, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia; and after they came to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them.(Acts 16:6-7, NASB95)

I grew up singing a song which had the line, "taught by the Bible, led by the Spirit, we'll walk the heavenly way."  These two ingredients really are important.  The Bible is our sole source of authority; it is the boundary for our actions; it cannot be ignored and is never trumped.

The Spirit does still work, however.  The Bible is foundational, but the Spirit gives us insight for timing and direction.  After all, the Apostles had been instructed to make disciples of all nations, but here the Spirit forbade them to spread the Gospel in Asia Minor.  Later, Paul would have a great ministry there, but now God had another work to do, in Macedonia.

Make the Bible your foundation, and follow the Spirit.  God's work will be done!

In His Grace,
Dr. Randy White
