A Reversal of Roles
"But after the death of Jehoiada the officials of Judah came and bowed down to the king, and the king listened to them. They abandoned the house of the Lord, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherim and the idols; so wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their guilt. Yet He sent prophets to them to bring them back to the Lord; though they testified against them, they would not listen. Then the Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people and said to them, “Thus God has said, ‘Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord and do not prosper? Because you have forsaken the Lord, He has also forsaken you.’”" (2 Chronicles 24:17-20, NASB95)
Under the leadership of Chief Priest Jehoida, the Levites had been negligent in gathering the annual Temple Tax and keeping up the Temple. King Joash forced their hand and required obedience. Years later, however, after Jehoida died, King Joash had “softened” and began to allow the worship of pagan Gods in Israel and the abandonment of the Temple once again. Jehoida’s son Zechariah was now Chief Priest and began to call the people back to the Lord.
Rather than rise in thanks, the people conspired against him. At the command of Joash they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the Temple. (Never believe that faithfulness to the Lord will bring you the respect of the people!)
To make the story worse, it was Zechariah’s father who had saved Joash’s life and restored him to the throne. Joash failed to remember the grace displayed to him through Jehoida. In one Bible chapter the story goes from willing King and reluctant Priest to faithless King and willing Priest.
The moral of the story? Today is a new day! Yesterday’s faithfulness means nothing. Are you faithful today?
