Who Are The Real Prisoners?
As you can imagine, in the past 50 years I have had many moving experiences as I have sought to help others in their quest for peace with God, for meaning and purpose in this present life.
One such experience was in one of the most infamous high-security penitentiaries in America. Some of our Campus Crusade staff had been working with hundreds of inmates in this prison in Atlanta, Georgia. Several of them were convicted murderers. But as I sat listening, they gave testimony of how they had been forgiven by God through their faith in Christ. And even though in prison, their spirits had been set free. I was deeply moved by their powerful testimonies.
Suddenly my mind raced across the continent to Hollywood, California. Two nights previously I was privileged to be a guest at a great gathering of Hollywood personalities. They were among the rich and the famous of America. I remember a world-famous actor sitting on my left. He was inebriated, and very angry.
When I began to tell him about my work with students, he spouted at me, "Why waste your time on students? They are just a bunch of hot-headed radicals!"
Then he said, "Why doesn't somebody work with older people?" He suddenly began to weep. "Why doesn't somebody help me? I need help!" I was able to help him look to Christ. Later he was baptized in one of the leading churches in Southern California.
Sitting on the other side was the rich and the famous daughter of one of Hollywood's founders. She was wealthy, and lived in a palatial mansion, but she told me she had nothing to live for and was seriously thinking about suicide. But her countenance visibly changed as I shared the essence of Christ's love and forgiveness with her from a little book which I wrote called Four Spiritual Laws, which she asked to keep. She wanted to take it with her, she said, so she could read it over and over and over again.
God's pardon, peace, purpose and power to be what He wants us to be are available for everyone, from prisoners to the rich and famous.
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
