When Tragedy Strikes
I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor (Comforter), who will never leave you (John 14:16).
It baffles me how some people try to get by without the Lord. They have nowhere to turn, nowhere to go. When tragedy strikes, they have no hope, which makes for double tragedy.
Early one morning I received a telephone call from a good friend whom my wife, Vonette, and I had known for 30 years. Her husband had passed away in his sleep and she was calling to ask me to participate in the memorial service.
Later in the same day, one of our young Campus Crusade for Christ staff couples called to report that their four-year-old son had just passed away. I had prayed with them only a couple of days before, following their son's third heart operation in as many days.
This same day, I also prayed with a staff member whose granddaughter was in intensive care because of a viral brain infection.
All these dear people knew the Lord, and trusted Him. They still experienced pain, but the Holy Spirit comforted them, and gave them hope.
I was recently told of a Christian couple whose two beautiful teenage daughters, ages 19 and 15, were drowned during an outing. What a horrible tragedy. But the father wrote, "Although it has been the most difficult time of our lives, we have seen the Lord work in many ways. In a situation like this, the first question that we have to ask ourselves is: Are we going to put our full trust in the Lord and know beyond all doubts that His Word is infallible and true? The answer has to be an absolute 'yes.' We know beyond a shadow of doubt that our girls are dynamic Christians and they now have assignments and missions in Heaven. We also know that they are much more in our future than they were in our past. We will all have a glorious reunion in what I believe is the near future. Although we look forward to that great reunion, we must be prepared to accomplish the assignments and missions that the Lord has for us until we all go up."
Perhaps you are experiencing sorrow and tears in your own life. As Christians we are not immune to suffering. But let us rejoice in the knowledge that God is love, He is still in control, and He is preparing a glorious future for all who put their trust in Him.
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
