Great Men Honor God's Word
is God's message and revelation to the human race, and to you and me personally.
All truly great men develop a deep appreciation for God's holy and inspired Word.
Martin Luther said he studied his Bible in the same way he gathered apples. First, he shook the whole tree, that the ripest might fall. Then he shook each limb. And when he had shaken each limb, he shook each branch. And after each branch, every twig. And then he looked under every leaf.
Luther admonishes us: "Search the Bible as a whole, shaking the whole tree. Read it rapidly, as you would any other book. Then shake every limb -- study book after book. Then shake every branch, giving attention to the chapters.... Then shake each twig, by a careful study of the paragraphs and sentences. And you will be rewarded if you will look under each leaf, by searching the meaning of the words."
The great Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the United States, once said of God's word, "Hold fast to the Bible as the (anchor) of your liberties. Write its precepts in your hearts, and practice them in your lives. To the influence of this book we are indebted for all the progress made in true civilization, and to this we must look as our guide in the future. 'Righteousness exalteth a nation; but sin is a reproach to any people.'"
General Grant realized an important truth about the Bible. Its God-inspired message to mankind can transform men and women, heal broken relationships and chart or change the destiny of nations.
Our first president and father of our country, General George Washington, said, "It is impossible to rightly govern... without God and the Bible."
Thomas Jefferson said, "The Bible is the cornerstone of liberty... students' perusal of the sacred volume will make us better citizens."
God says, "My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh" (Proverbs 4:20-22, KJV).
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
