When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble
One year our beautiful, God-given international headquarters and retreat center at Arrowhead Springs, California was threatened by one of those raging brush fires so prevalent in California.
Many buildings, including the bungalow where Vonette and I lived, were almost engulfed in flames during the height of the fire. Although I was not present, I was told by those who were fighting the fire that the heat and smoke became so intense that they were forced to lie on the ground in order to breathe as they sprayed water on the buildings.
At one point, they were just about to abandon our home when suddenly the winds miraculously shifted and swept the flames in another direction. It was definitely an answer to many prayers.
Ralph Osborn, a member of our History's Handful team from Dallas, was visiting Arrowhead Springs that day. After evacuating the grounds, as he and others were praying that afternoon, he looked out the window at the flag snapping in the wind. They were praying that God would turn the 90-mile-per-hour winds away from the buildings at Arrowhead Springs. He relates that suddenly the flag began to turn and within moments had done a 180 degree turn! They all were awestruck at what God had done before their very eyes.
Vonette and I were in San Diego at a Campus Crusade planning meeting when the word came at noon that the staff had been evacuated. We assumed that the situation was much as we had experienced in years past -- probably a genuine danger of fire existed but was not so serious as to demand great concern at the time. Then an urgent word came that the flames had enveloped the campus. Later, on the way back to Arrowhead Springs, we heard that several buildings had burned and assumed that our home was one of those, since it stood on the edge of the campus and would be especially vulnerable to fire.
We, too, got on our knees and began to pray that God would turn the winds. As we learned later, God did miraculously answer our prayers.
Nothing is too great or impossible for our great Creator God and Savior. He can calm storms. He can part seas. He can do anything.
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
