Assurance

Bill Bright, Campus Crusade for Christ

Dear friends:

Some time ago a marvelous couple came all the way from Zurich, Switzerland, to meet with me in Los Angeles because they had heard I could help them find God. I had previously had the privilege of leading their son to Christ, and he had written to them, urging them to contact me. Their search for God had led them from atheism to oriental religions to the New Testament.

When I explained that you become a Christian by simply inviting Jesus Christ to come into your life, by faith, to forgive your sins and change your life, the father responded by saying, "I do this every day. I invite Jesus into my life several times a day, but I'm never sure He is there."

As I was praying for the right words with which to respond, Ephesians 2: 8, 9 came to mind: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- not by works, so that no one can boast" (NIV).

Related to that is a promise in 1 John 5, verse 14and 15: "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us -- whatever we ask -- we know that we have what we asked of him."

I told this couple, "If you receive Jesus Christ into your life, He says He will come and He promises never to leave you. And you can know, beyond any shadow of doubt on the authority of God's Word, that you have eternal life." I emphasized that our assurance is on the authority of God's Word and the total integrity of the most holy God Himself, not on our own emotions.

As I shared that truth with them, their lives were transformed before my very eyes, because now they understood that receiving Christ is an act of the will by faith, and that we can fully trust God and His inspired Word.

If you are not sure Jesus is in your life, simply ask Him to come in, right now, where you are, by faith. He will do what He promised. You will never have to ask Him in again. The rest of your life, thank Him daily that He is in your life.

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission
each year until our Lord returns,

Bill Bright
