A Dog Named Sam
A story is told about a bird dog named Sam. Finding birds and pointing them with contagious enthusiasm, Sam had taught his owner the joy of becoming part of nature. He was so much more than a bird dog, however. Often, the dog and his master would share lazy lunches in an abandoned apple orchard, and the snooze that followed.
Late one afternoon, Sam and his owner became separated. Neither was familiar with the area. His owner called and whistled, but there was no sign of Sam. The man had to get back to town for an important appointment and would not be able to return until the next day. How could he leave his trusty dog to wander all night, alone and cold? he wondered. Would Sam return to find no one there? Would he wander off and be lost for good, feeling abandoned and lonely?
Then the man remembered a trick an old dog trainer had passed on. He unbuttoned his jacket, removed his shirt, and laid it on the ground under the branches of a small bush.
When he returned the next morning, he found the dog curled up with his nose under the sleeve of the shirt. Sam looked up and wagged his tail as if to say, "Where have you been, friend? I have been waiting patiently for you all night."
Have you ever felt lonely and abandoned? Loneliness is one of the most common problems in our modern culture, and Christians are not immune to it.
If we ever start having those feelings, we have something better than an old shirt to comfort us. We can curl up with God's Word, the Bible
and be reminded of our Lord's precious truths and promises, which are personal, relevant, and eternal:
1. He promised to never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5
4. He has given us the Comforter, His Spirit (John 14:16
Sadly, people outside of Christ
do not have those wonderful benefits. They have nowhere to turn if they are ever overcome with feelings of loneliness, which often lead to depression, addictions, or even suicide.
That should motivate us all the more to share with everyone we can "the most joyful news ever announced" (Luke 2:10
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
