Personalize your work
Pastor Daron Lindemann

You receive a card in the mail. You curiously open the envelope, glancing at the card, which says something nice like, “Congratulations, graduate!” or “Friends are like rainbows.”

Then you open up the card and see two different types of writing on the inside. One is preprinted, and the other is scribbled by the sender. Which attracts more of your attention?

Even though a paid professional created the preprinted message, with a symmetrically balanced font and letters spaced to perfection—the personal note is more meaningful.

At your workplace, nobody else can do the job that you do. Your fingerprints on your keyboard, your traces of coffee or coconut water that have smudged the papers, your passwords, these are uniquely yours. Someone else could perform the job description, but they’d do it differently. A proven expert higher up the professional chain could come in, but he or she still wouldn’t be you.

Your name, your reputation, and the way that you smile or serve or handle stress, these personalize your position in a way that honors your Savior. And shares the gospel. The apostle Paul wrote, “What has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel . . . because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord” (Philippians 1:12,14).

We personalize everything these days: phone cases, license plates, and tattoos. Your job is personalized, and because of it you make a difference—for Jesus.

You have the power to change your world!

The Bible tells the story of how God reformed a misshaped world through Jesus. How you see yourself fitting into that story shapes you. And as you reach out to share that story, it can’t help but shape the world around you!
