A whiff of Jesus
How do we share our faith with people at work? Sometimes we can be direct and tell them the wonderful story of Jesus’ love if they don’t know it. The circumstances may be right for it: Our relationships are genuine and open. We have gotten to know each other and have discussed other personal matters. Explaining the reason for our hope is the natural thing to do.
But sometimes there are limitations. It wouldn’t help the cause of the gospel to force the issue. The decorum of the workplace might make it uncomfortable for everyone. The noise of the workplace might make it impossible to say Jesus without it sounding like cussing. Sometimes it’s even against the rules.
Because we love him so much and have great respect for his Word, we want people to know. When there is no other way, we can always give people a whiff of Jesus. Even if the setting restricts talking about our faith, we can make sure people smell it on us. “Wherever we go, God uses us to make clear what it means to know Christ. It’s like a fragrance that fills the air” (2 Corinthians 2:14 GW).
I think we know the implications. It’s that whole salt and light thing: acting and speaking in a way that gives people a pretty good idea who is behind it.
May we pass the sniff test on a regular basis.
