Everybody knows your name
Pastor Mark Jeske
Everybody feels a need to belong somewhere. That’s what made the Cheers tavern so much fun. Remember the theme song? A place where everybody knows your name? As soon as you walked in you knew it was a warm and enjoyable place to be. “Hey—it’s Norm!”
Wouldn’t it be awesome if every church had that kind of people magnetism? A place to belong . . . a place where you were accepted unconditionally . . . a place where you could go to escape, to heal, to learn something, to find friends, to connect, to grow? God made people to need other people. We need to know somebody is interested in us, cares about how we’re doing, knows and loves our children, and is always there for us. We need a place where we can get involved and serve and use our gifts and talents.
Here’s what a happy church fellowship looks like: “Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people” (Acts 2:45-47).
Is your church a place like that, i.e., a place of sacrificial giving, genuine love, and a dominant spirit of celebration? How can you help your congregation to be as irresistible to wandering people as Cheers?
