You need the Spirit
Linda Buxa

Between the messages the world tells you and the things you know about yourself, I bet you could come up with a whole list of the reasons you are a screwup. Over and over your conscience would whisper that you are quick-tempered, conniving, unlovable, judgmental, and weak. If you were left on your own, you might be tempted to truly believe the bad things you know about yourself.

That, right there, is the whole reason that when Jesus went back to heaven to get your room ready, he didn’t leave you alone. Instead, he gave you the Holy Spirit: “We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us” (1 Corinthians 2:12).

You need the Holy Spirit. Without him, you can’t believe God’s humanly incomprehensible message. When you were baptized, the Holy Spirit stamped God’s name on your heart. When you read God’s Word, the Holy Spirit helps you understand that Jesus willingly paid the exorbitant price of his life to buy you back from hell. The Spirit reminds you that God’s mercy is new every morning, that he chooses to want you in his family. The Holy Spirit whispers over and over that you are forgiven, at peace, loved, valuable, and strong.

That’s the message you need to hear. That’s the message the Holy Spirit helps you believe.
