God invented love
Pastor Mark Jeske

Yesterday, Valentine’s Day, which is a time to express love through cards and gifts, has a strange and murky beginning. The early Christian church honored the memory of a number of men named Valentinus and celebrated their feast day onFebruary 14. Their legends describe them as heroic priests who were martyred in a time of persecution.

Over the centuries the observance acquired overtones of romance and pagan images like the boy-god Cupid shooting his little love arrows. None of that really matters. Thanks to this helpful observance, people have an annual reminder to nourish their relationships.

God himself invented the magnetism between male and female, and he gives his blessing to dating, love, marriage, and sexuality. Many Christians don’t quite know what to make of the last of the Old Testament’s books of poetry, the Song of Songs. It is exactly what it looks like—the libretto to a musical about the delight, beauty, passion, and ecstasy of being in love.

We all tend to take one another for granted, especially our loved ones. Go ahead—read the Song. Who needs to hear you say this today: “How beautiful you are, my darling! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes are doves” (Song of Songs1:15)?

Discover the power of putting others first!

This new book, The Power of Second, dares to take a deeper, biblical look at the power of submission. And it will help give you a new revelation—that in Jesus, there’s power in putting others first. And it can change everything.
