Build your love muscles

You get out of it what you put into it. People who faithfully work out know this is true. Sitting at home on the couch makes you weaker. So does simply going through the motions. If you want to get stronger, you lift heavier weights. If you want to be faster, you have to do sprints.

When it comes to faith, thanks to what Jesus has done for you, you definitely do not get out of it what you put into it. You put in sin; Jesus gives you perfection. You put in guilt; he gives you peace. You put in death; God gives you life.

But when it comes to your faith community, you do get out of it what you put into it. Staying at home or only going through the motions makes you weaker and more vulnerable. God puts you in a group of believers to help you build your love muscles. He tells you how: “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24,25).

Take the first step. Show up at church and introduce yourself. Get to know your spiritual workout partners.

One last thing, if you happen to be a regular at God’s gym, remember how much courage it can take for a newcomer to walk in. Be welcoming. Be encouraging.
