Unfashionable Parenting

This Sunday at New City I’m beginning a new series to start the year entitled “The Make-Up of an Unfashionable Church.” I’ll be taking six weeks to define who we are, why we do what we do, and where we’re going. Even though every sermon I preach is informed by our mission as a local church, at the beginning of every year I take a few weeks to lay things out explicitly. I’m really looking forward to preaching this series.

As I was sharing what I was going to preach with my music director, Brandon Wells, he went looking for some appropriate quotes and meditations on what it means to be morally, spiritually, and intellectually unfashionable. Even though I won’t be addressing this issue specifically, he found and passed along this short piece by J.C. Ryle on parenting which demonstrates how Christian parents make a difference by raising their kids differently. As is the case with everything Bishop Ryle ever wrote, this piece is excellent–and I just had to pass it on to you!
