The Folly of Trusting in Riches

491 Hear this , all peoples ; Give ear , all inhabitants of the world , 2 Both low e and high e , Rich and poor together . 3 My mouth will speak wisdom , And the meditation of my heart will be understanding . 4 I will incline my ear to a proverb ; I will express my riddle on the harp . 5 Why should I fear in days of adversity , When the iniquity of my foes surrounds me,

6 Even those who trust in their wealth And boast in the abundance of their riches ? 7 No man can by any means redeem his brother Or give to God a ransom for him- 8 For the redemption of his soul is costly , And he should cease trying forever - 9 That he should live on eternally , That he should not undergo decay . 10 For he sees that even wise men die ; The stupid and the senseless alike perish And leave their wealth to others . 11 Their inner thought is that their houses are forever And their dwelling places to all generations ; They have called their lands after their own names . 12 But man in his pomp will not endure ; He is like the beasts that perish . 13 This is the way of those who are foolish , And of those after them who approve their words . Selah . 14 As sheep they are appointed for Sheol ; Death shall be their shepherd ; And the upright shall rule over them in the morning , And their form shall be for Sheol to consume So that they have no habitation .

15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol , For He will receive me. Selah . 16 Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich , When the glory of his house is increased ; 17 For when he dies he will carry nothing e away; His glory will not descend after him. 18 Though while he lives he congratulates himself - And though men praise you when you do well for yourself- 19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers ; They will never e e see the light . 20 Man in his pomp , yet without understanding , Is like the beasts that perish .

God Is the Judge

501 The Mighty One , God , the Lord , has spoken , And summoned the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting . 2 Out of Zion , the perfection of beauty , God has shone forth . 3 May our God come and not keep silence ; Fire devours before Him, And it is very tempestuous around Him. 4 He summons the heavens above e , And the earth , to judge His people : 5 "Gather My godly ones to Me, Those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice ." 6 And the heavens declare His righteousness , For God Himself is judge . Selah .

7 " Hear , O My people , and I will speak ; O Israel , I will testify against you; I am God , your God . 8 "I do not reprove you for your sacrifices , And your burnt offerings are continually before Me. 9 "I shall take no young bull out of your house Nor male goats out of your folds . 10 "For every beast of the forest is Mine, The cattle on a thousand hills . 11 "I know every bird of the mountains , And everything that moves in the field is Mine . 12 "If I were hungry I would not tell you, For the world is Mine, and all it contains . 13 "Shall I eat the flesh of bulls Or drink the blood of male goats ? 14 "Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving And pay your vows to the Most High ; 15 Call upon Me in the day of trouble ; I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me."

16 But to the wicked God says , "What right have you to tell of My statutes And to take My covenant in your mouth ? 17 "For you hate discipline , And you cast My words behind you. 18 "When you see a thief , you are pleased with him, And you associate with adulterers . 19 "You let your mouth loose in evil And your tongue frames deceit . 20 "You sit and speak against your brother ; You slander e your own mother's son . 21 "These things you have done and I kept silence ; You thought that I was just like you; I will reprove you and state the case in order before your eyes . 22 "Now consider this , you who forget God , Or I will tear you in pieces, and there will be none to deliver . 23 "He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me; And to him who orders his way aright I shall show the salvation of God ."

Salutation

11 Paul , a bond-servant of Christ Jesus , [1] called as an apostle , set apart for the gospel of God , 2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures , 3 concerning His Son , who was born of a [2]descendant of David according to the flesh , 4 who was declared the Son of God with power [3]by the resurrection from the dead , according to the [4]Spirit of holiness , Jesus Christ our Lord , 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship [5]to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name's sake , 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ ; 7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome , called as [6] saints : Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ .

Paul's Desire to Visit Rome

8 First , I thank my God through Jesus Christ [7]for you all , because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world . 9 For God , whom I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son , is my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you, 10 always in my prayers making request , if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you. 11 For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be [8]established ; 12 that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other's faith , both yours and mine . 13 I do not want you to be unaware , brethren , that often I have planned to come to you (and have been prevented so far ) so that I may obtain some fruit among you also , even as among the rest of the Gentiles . 14 I am [9]under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians , both to the wise and to the foolish . 15 So , for my part , I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome .

The Power of the Gospel

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel , for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes , to the Jew first and also to the Greek . 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed [10]from faith to faith ; as it is written , "[11] BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH ."

The Guilt of Mankind

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth [12]in unrighteousness ,

19 because that which is known about God is evident [13]within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature , have been clearly seen , being understood through what has been made , so that they are without excuse . 21 For even though they knew God , they did not [14]honor Him as God or give thanks , but they became futile in their speculations , and their foolish heart was darkened . 22 Professing to be wise , they became fools , 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and [15]crawling creatures . 24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity , so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for [16]a lie , and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator , who is blessed [17]forever . Amen . 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions ; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is [18]unnatural e , 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another , men with men committing [19]indecent acts and receiving in [20]their own persons the due penalty of their error . 28 And just as they did not see fit [21]to acknowledge e God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind , to do those things which are not proper , 29 being filled with all unrighteousness , wickedness , greed , evil ; full of envy , murder , strife , deceit , malice ; they are gossips , 30 slanderers , [22] haters of God , insolent , arrogant , boastful , inventors of evil , disobedient to parents , 31 without understanding , untrustworthy , unloving , unmerciful ; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God , that those who practice such things are worthy of death , they not only do the same , but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
