A Prayer for Vindication and Deliverance

431 Vindicate me, O God , and plead my case against an ungodly e nation ; O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man ! 2 For You are the God of my strength ; why have You rejected me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy ? 3 O send out Your light and Your truth , let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill And to Your dwelling places . 4 Then I will go to the altar of God , To God my exceeding joy ; And upon the lyre I shall praise You, O God , my God . 5 Why are you in despair , O my soul ? And why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God , for I shall again praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God .

Former Deliverances and Present Troubles

441 O God , we have heard with our ears , Our fathers have told us The work that You did in their days , In the days of old . 2 You with Your own hand drove out the nations ; Then You planted them; You afflicted the peoples , Then You spread them abroad. 3 For by their own sword they did not possess the land , And their own arm did not save them, But Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence , For You favored them. 4 You are my King , O God ; Command victories for Jacob . 5 Through You we will push back our adversaries ; Through Your name we will trample down those who rise up against us. 6 For I will not trust in my bow , Nor will my sword save me. 7 But You have saved us from our adversaries , And You have put to shame those who hate us. 8 In God we have boasted all day long, And we will give thanks to Your name forever . Selah .

9 Yet You have rejected us and brought us to dishonor , And do not go out with our armies . 10 You cause us to turn back from the adversary ; And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves. 11 You give us as sheep to be eaten And have scattered us among the nations . 12 You sell Your people cheaply e , And have not profited by their sale . 13 You make us a reproach to our neighbors , A scoffing and a derision to those around us. 14 You make us a byword among the nations , A laughingstock e among the peoples . 15 All day long my dishonor is before me And my humiliation e has overwhelmed me, 16 Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles , Because of the presence of the enemy and the avenger .

17 All this has come upon us, but we have not forgotten You, And we have not dealt falsely with Your covenant . 18 Our heart has not turned back , And our steps have not deviated from Your way , 19 Yet You have crushed us in a place of jackals And covered us with the shadow of death . 20 If we had forgotten the name of our God Or extended our hands to a strange god , 21 Would not God find this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart . 22 But for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered . 23 Arouse Yourself, why do You sleep , O Lord ? Awake , do not reject us forever . 24 Why do You hide Your face And forget our affliction and our oppression ? 25 For our soul has sunk down into the dust ; Our body cleaves to the earth . 26 Rise up, be our help , And redeem us for the sake of Your lovingkindness .

A Song for the King's Marriage

451 My heart overflows with a good theme ; I address my verses to the King ; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer . 2 You are fairer than the sons of men ; Grace is poured upon Your lips ; Therefore e God has blessed You forever . 3 Gird Your sword on Your thigh , O Mighty One , In Your splendor and Your majesty ! 4 And in Your majesty ride on victoriously , For the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness ; Let Your right hand teach You awesome things . 5 Your arrows are sharp ; The peoples fall under You; Your arrows are in the heart of the King's enemies .

6 Your throne , O God , is forever and ever ; A scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom . 7 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness ; Therefore e God , Your God , has anointed You With the oil of joy above Your fellows . 8 All Your garments are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia ; Out of ivory palaces stringed instruments have made You glad . 9 Kings' daughters are among Your noble ladies; At Your right hand stands the queen in gold from Ophir .

10 Listen , O daughter , give attention and incline your ear : Forget your people and your father's house ; 11 Then the King will desire your beauty . Because He is your Lord , bow down to Him. 12 The daughter of Tyre will come with a gift ; The rich among the people will seek your favor . 13 The King's daughter is all glorious within ; Her clothing is interwoven with gold . 14 She will be led to the King in embroidered work ; The virgins , her companions who follow her, Will be brought to You. 15 They will be led forth with gladness and rejoicing ; They will enter into the King's palace . 16 In place of your fathers will be your sons ; You shall make them princes in all the earth . 17 I will cause Your name to be remembered in all generations ; Therefore e the peoples will give You thanks forever and ever .

The Folly of Trusting in Riches

491 Hear this , all peoples ; Give ear , all inhabitants of the world , 2 Both low e and high e , Rich and poor together . 3 My mouth will speak wisdom , And the meditation of my heart will be understanding . 4 I will incline my ear to a proverb ; I will express my riddle on the harp . 5 Why should I fear in days of adversity , When the iniquity of my foes surrounds me,

6 Even those who trust in their wealth And boast in the abundance of their riches ? 7 No man can by any means redeem his brother Or give to God a ransom for him- 8 For the redemption of his soul is costly , And he should cease trying forever - 9 That he should live on eternally , That he should not undergo decay . 10 For he sees that even wise men die ; The stupid and the senseless alike perish And leave their wealth to others . 11 Their inner thought is that their houses are forever And their dwelling places to all generations ; They have called their lands after their own names . 12 But man in his pomp will not endure ; He is like the beasts that perish . 13 This is the way of those who are foolish , And of those after them who approve their words . Selah . 14 As sheep they are appointed for Sheol ; Death shall be their shepherd ; And the upright shall rule over them in the morning , And their form shall be for Sheol to consume So that they have no habitation .

15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol , For He will receive me. Selah . 16 Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich , When the glory of his house is increased ; 17 For when he dies he will carry nothing e away; His glory will not descend after him. 18 Though while he lives he congratulates himself - And though men praise you when you do well for yourself- 19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers ; They will never e e see the light . 20 Man in his pomp , yet without understanding , Is like the beasts that perish .

Longing for God's House

841 How lovely are Your dwelling places , O Lord of hosts ! 2 My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the Lord ; My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God . 3 The bird also has found a house , And the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young , Even Your altars , O Lord of hosts , My King and my God . 4 How blessed are those who dwell in Your house ! They are ever praising You. Selah . 5 How blessed is the man whose strength is in You, In whose heart are the highways to Zion! 6 Passing through the valley of Baca they make it a spring ; The early rain also covers it with blessings . 7 They go from strength to strength , Every one of them appears before God in Zion .

8 O Lord God of hosts , hear my prayer ; Give ear , O God of Jacob ! Selah . 9 Behold our shield , O God , And look upon the face of Your anointed . 10 For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand outside. I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God Than dwell in the tents of wickedness . 11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield ; The Lord gives grace and glory ; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly . 12 O Lord of hosts , How blessed is the man who trusts in You!

A Prayer for God's Mercy on Israel

851 O Lord , You showed favor to Your land ; You restored the captivity of Jacob . 2 You forgave the iniquity of Your people ; You covered all their sin . Selah . 3 You withdrew all Your fury ; You turned away from Your burning anger . 4 Restore us, O God of our salvation , And cause Your indignation toward us to cease . 5 Will You be angry with us forever ? Will You prolong Your anger to all generations ? 6 Will You not Yourself revive us again , That Your people may rejoice in You? 7 Show us Your lovingkindness , O Lord , And grant us Your salvation .

8 I will hear what God the Lord will say ; For He will speak peace to His people , to His godly ones ; But let them not turn back to folly . 9 Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, That glory may dwell in our land . 10 Lovingkindness and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed each other. 11 Truth springs from the earth , And righteousness looks down from heaven . 12 Indeed , the Lord will give what is good , And our land will yield its produce . 13 Righteousness will go before Him And will make His footsteps into a way .

The Privileges of Dwelling in Zion

871 His foundation is in the holy mountains . 2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion More than all the other dwelling places of Jacob . 3 Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God . Selah .

4 "I shall mention Rahab and Babylon among those who know Me; Behold , Philistia and Tyre with Ethiopia : 'This one was born there .' " 5 But of Zion it shall be said , "This one and that one were born in her"; And the Most High Himself will establish her. 6 The Lord will count when He registers the peoples , "This one was born there ." Selah . 7 Then those who sing as well as those who play the flutes shall say, "All my springs of joy are in you."
