The Oracle concerning Tyre

231 The oracle concerning Tyre . Wail , O ships of Tarshish , For Tyre is destroyed , without house or harbor ; It is reported to them from the land of Cyprus . 2 Be silent , you inhabitants of the coastland , You merchants of Sidon ; Your messengers crossed the sea 3 And were on many waters . The grain of the Nile , the harvest of the River was her revenue ; And she was the market of nations . 4 Be ashamed , O Sidon ; For the sea speaks , the stronghold of the sea , saying , "I have neither travailed nor given birth , I have neither brought up young men nor reared virgins . 5 When the report reaches Egypt , They will be in anguish at the report of Tyre . 6 Pass over to Tarshish ; Wail , O inhabitants of the coastland . 7 Is this your jubilant city, Whose origin is from antiquity , Whose feet used to carry her to colonize distant places? 8 Who has planned this against Tyre , the bestower of crowns , Whose merchants were princes , whose traders were the honored of the earth ? 9 The Lord of hosts has planned it, to defile the pride of all beauty , To despise all the honored of the earth . 10 Overflow your land like the Nile , O daughter of Tarshish , There is no more restraint . 11 He has stretched His hand out over the sea , He has made the kingdoms tremble ; The Lord has given a command concerning Canaan to demolish its strongholds . 12 He has said , " You shall exult no more e , O crushed virgin daughter of Sidon . Arise , pass over to Cyprus ; even there you will find no rest ." 13 Behold , the land of the Chaldeans -this is the people which was not; Assyria appointed it for desert creatures -they erected their siege towers , they stripped its palaces , they made it a ruin . 14 Wail , O ships of Tarshish , For your stronghold is destroyed

15 Now in that day Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years like the days of one king . At the end of seventy years it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the harlot : 16 Take your harp , walk about the city , O forgotten harlot ; Pluck the strings skillfully , sing many songs , That you may be remembered . 17 It will come about at the end of seventy years that the Lord will visit Tyre . Then she will go back to her harlot's wages and will play the harlot with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth . 18 Her gain and her harlot's wages will be set apart to the Lord ; it will not be stored up or hoarded , but her gain will become sufficient food and choice attire for those who dwell in the presence of the Lord .

The LORD's Judgment on the Earth

241 Behold , the Lord lays the earth waste , devastates it, distorts its surface and scatters its inhabitants . 2 And the people will be like the priest , the servant like his master , the maid like her mistress , the buyer like the seller , the lender like the borrower , the creditor like the debtor . 3 The earth will be completely laid waste and completely despoiled , for the Lord has spoken this word . 4 The earth mourns and withers , the world fades and withers , the exalted of the people of the earth fade away . 5 The earth is also polluted by its inhabitants , for they transgressed laws , violated statutes , broke the everlasting covenant . 6 Therefore e , a curse devours the earth , and those who live in it are held guilty . Therefore e , the inhabitants of the earth are burned , and few men are left . 7 The new wine mourns , The vine decays , All the merry-hearted e sigh . 8 The gaiety of tambourines ceases , The noise of revelers stops , The gaiety of the harp ceases . 9 They do not drink wine with song ; Strong drink is bitter to those who drink it. 10 The city of chaos is broken down ; Every house is shut up so that none may enter . 11 There is an outcry in the streets concerning the wine ; All joy turns to gloom . The gaiety of the earth is banished . 12 Desolation is left in the city And the gate is battered to ruins .

13 For thus it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples , As the shaking of an olive tree , As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over . 14 They raise their voices , they shout for joy ; They cry out from the west concerning the majesty of the Lord . 15 Therefore e glorify the Lord in the east , The name of the Lord , the God of Israel , In the coastlands of the sea .

16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs , " Glory to the Righteous One ," But I say , " Woe to me! Woe to me! Alas for me! The treacherous deal treacherously , And the treacherous deal very treacherously ." 17 Terror and pit and snare Confront you, O inhabitant of the earth . 18 Then it will be that he who flees the report of disaster will fall into the pit , And he who climbs out of the pit will be caught in the snare ; For the windows above e are opened , and the foundations of the earth shake . 19 The earth is broken asunder , The earth is split through , The earth is shaken violently . 20 The earth reels to and fro like a drunkard And it totters like a shack , For its transgression is heavy upon it, And it will fall , never to rise again . 21 So it will happen in that day , That the Lord will punish the host of heaven on high , And the kings of the earth on earth . 22 They will be gathered together Like prisoners in the dungeon , And will be confined in prison ; And after many days they will be punished . 23 Then the moon will be abashed and the sun ashamed , For the Lord of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem , And His glory will be before His elders .

Praise for the LORD's Favor

251 O Lord , You are my God ; I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name ; For You have worked wonders , Plans formed long ago , with perfect faithfulness . 2 For You have made a city into a heap , A fortified city into a ruin ; A palace of strangers is a city no more , It will never e be rebuilt . 3 Therefore e a strong people will glorify You; Cities of ruthless nations will revere You. 4 For You have been a defense for the helpless , A defense for the needy in his distress , A refuge from the storm , a shade from the heat ; For the breath of the ruthless Is like a rain storm against a wall . 5 Like heat in drought , You subdue the uproar of aliens ; Like heat by the shadow of a cloud , the song of the ruthless is silenced .

6 The Lord of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain ; A banquet of aged wine , choice pieces with marrow , And refined , aged wine . 7 And on this mountain He will swallow up the covering e which is over all peoples , Even the veil which is stretched over all nations . 8 He will swallow up death for all time , And the Lord GOD will wipe tears away from all faces , And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth ; For the Lord has spoken .

9 And it will be said in that day , "Behold , this is our God for whom we have waited that He might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited ; Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation ." 10 For the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain , And Moab will be trodden down in his place As straw is trodden down in the water of a manure pile . 11 And he will spread out his hands in the middle of it As a swimmer spreads out his hands to swim , But the Lord will lay low his pride together with the trickery of his hands . 12 The unassailable fortifications of your walls He will bring down , Lay low and cast to the ground , even to the dust .

Salutation

11 Paul and Timothy , bond-servants of Christ Jesus , To all the [1] saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi , [2]including the overseers and deacons : 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ .

Paul's Prayer for the Philippian Christians

3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all , 5 in view of your [3] participation in the gospel from the first day until now . 6 For I am confident of this very thing , that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus .

7 [4]For it is only right for me to feel this way about you all , because I have you in my heart , since both in my [5] imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel , you all are partakers of grace with me. 8 For God is my witness , how I long for you all with the [6]affection of Christ Jesus .

9 And this I pray , that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment , 10 so that you may [7] approve the things that are excellent , in order to be sincere and blameless [8]until the day of Christ ; 11 having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ , to the glory and praise of God .

To Me to Live Is Christ

12 Now I want you to know , brethren , that my circumstances e have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel , 13 so that my [9] imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole [10]praetorian guard and to everyone else , 14 and that most of the [11]brethren , trusting in the Lord because of my [12] imprisonment , have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear . 15 Some , to be sure , are preaching Christ even [13]from envy and strife , but some also [13]from good will ; 16 the latter do it out of love , knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel ; 17 the former e proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition [15]rather than from pure motives , thinking to cause me distress in my [16] imprisonment . 18 What then ? Only that in every way , whether in pretense or in truth , Christ is proclaimed ; and in this I rejoice . Yes , and I will rejoice , 19 for I know that this will turn out for my [17]deliverance through your [18]prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ , 20 according to my earnest expectation and hope , that I will not be put to shame in anything , but that with all boldness , Christ will even now , as always , be exalted in my body , whether by life or by death .

21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain . 22 [19]But if I am to live on in the flesh , this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know [20]which to choose . 23 But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ , for that is very much better ; 24 yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake . 25 Convinced of this , I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy [21]in the faith , 26 so that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again .

27 Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ , so that whether I come and see you or remain absent , I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit , with one [22]mind striving together for the faith of the gospel ; 28 in no way alarmed by your opponents -which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God . 29 For to you it has been granted for Christ's sake , not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake , 30 experiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
