Cain and Abel

41 Now the man had relations with his wife Eve , and she conceived and gave birth to Cain , and she said , "I have gotten a manchild with the help of the Lord ." 2 Again , she gave birth to his brother Abel . And Abel was a keeper of flocks , but Cain was a tiller of the ground .

3 So it came about in the course e of time that Cain brought an offering to the Lord of the fruit of the ground . 4 Abel , on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions . And the Lord had regard for Abel and for his offering ; 5 but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard . So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell .

6 Then the Lord said to Cain , " Why are you angry ? And why has your countenance fallen ? 7 " If you do well , will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well , sin is crouching at the door ; and its desire is for you, but you must master it."

8 Cain told Abel his brother . And it came about when they were in the field , that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

9 Then the Lord said to Cain , " Where is Abel your brother ?" And he said , "I do not know . Am I my brother's keeper ?" 10 He said , "What have you done ? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to Me from the ground . 11 "Now you are cursed from the ground , which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand . 12 " When you cultivate the ground , it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth ."

13 Cain said to the Lord , "My punishment is too great to bear ! 14 "Behold , You have driven me this day from the face of the ground ; and from Your face I will be hidden , and I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth , and whoever finds me will kill me." 15 So the Lord said to him, "Therefore whoever kills Cain , vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold ." And the Lord appointed a sign for Cain , so that no one finding him would slay him.

16 Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord , and settled in the land of Nod , east of Eden . 17 Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived , and gave birth to Enoch ; and he built a city , and called the name of the city Enoch , after the name of his son . 18 Now to Enoch was born Irad , and Irad became the father of Mehujael , and Mehujael became the father of Methushael , and Methushael became the father of Lamech .

19 Lamech took to himself two wives : the name of the one was Adah , and the name of the other , Zillah . 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal ; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock . 21 His brother's name was Jubal ; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe . 22 As for Zillah , she also gave birth to Tubal-cain , the forger of all implements of bronze and iron ; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah .

23 Lamech said to his wives , "Adah and Zillah , Listen to my voice , You wives of Lamech , Give heed to my speech , For I have killed a man for wounding me; And a boy for striking me; 24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold , Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold ."

25 Adam had relations with his wife again ; and she gave birth to a son , and named e him Seth , for, she said, "God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel , for Cain killed him." 26 To Seth , to him also a son was born ; and he called his name Enosh . Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord .

The Descendants of Adam

51 This is the book of the generations of Adam . In the day when God created man , He made him in the likeness of God . 2 He created them male and female , and He blessed them and named e them Man in the day when they were created . 3 When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years , he became the father of a son in his own likeness , according to his image , and named e him Seth . 4 Then the days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years , and he had other sons and daughters . 5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years , and he died .

6 Seth lived one hundred and five years , and became the father of Enosh . 7 Then Seth lived eight hundred and seven years after he became the father of Enosh , and he had other sons and daughters . 8 So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve e years , and he died . 9 Enosh lived ninety years , and became the father of Kenan . 10 Then Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen e years after he became the father of Kenan , and he had other sons and daughters . 11 So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years , and he died . 12 Kenan lived seventy years , and became the father of Mahalalel . 13 Then Kenan lived eight hundred and forty years after he became the father of Mahalalel , and he had other sons and daughters . 14 So all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years , and he died . 15 Mahalalel lived sixty-five e years , and became the father of Jared . 16 Then Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Jared , and he had other sons and daughters . 17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five e years , and he died . 18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two e years , and became the father of Enoch . 19 Then Jared lived eight hundred years after he became the father of Enoch , and he had other sons and daughters . 20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two e years , and he died .

21 Enoch lived sixty-five e years , and became the father of Methuselah . 22 Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah , and he had other sons and daughters . 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five e years . 24 Enoch walked with God ; and he was not, for God took him.

25 Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years , and became the father of Lamech . 26 Then Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years after he became the father of Lamech , and he had other sons and daughters . 27 So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine e years , and he died .

28 Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years , and became the father of a son . 29 Now he called his name Noah , saying , "This one will give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands arising from the ground which the Lord has cursed ." 30 Then Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five e years after he became the father of Noah , and he had other sons and daughters . 31 So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years , and he died . 32 Noah was five hundred years old , and Noah became the father of Shem , Ham , and Japheth .

The Wickedness of Mankind

61 Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land , and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful ; and they took wives for themselves, whomever e they chose .

3 Then the Lord said , " My Spirit shall not strive with man forever , because he also is flesh ; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years ."

4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days , and also afterward e , when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men , and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old , men of renown . 5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth , and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually e .

6 The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth , and He was grieved in His heart . 7 The Lord said , " I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land , from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky ; for I am sorry that I have made them."

8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord .

Noah Makes the Ark

9 These are the records of the generations of Noah . Noah was a righteous man , blameless in his time ; Noah walked with God . 10 Noah became the father of three sons : Shem , Ham , and Japheth .

11 Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God , and the earth was filled with violence . 12 God looked on the earth , and behold , it was corrupt ; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth .

13 Then God said to Noah , " The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because e of them; and behold , I am about to destroy them with the earth . 14 "Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood ; you shall make the ark with rooms , and shall cover it inside e and out with pitch . 15 "This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits , its breadth fifty cubits , and its height thirty cubits . 16 "You shall make a window for the ark , and finish it to a cubit from the top ; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower , second , and third decks. 17 "Behold , I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth , to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life , from under heaven ; everything that is on the earth shall perish . 18 "But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark -you and your sons and your wife , and your sons' wives with you. 19 " And of every living thing of all flesh , you shall bring two of every kind into the ark , to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female . 20 " Of the birds after their kind , and of the animals after their kind , of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind , two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive . 21 "As for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible , and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them."

22 Thus Noah did ; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did .

The Visit of the Wise Men

21 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king , magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem , saying , 2 "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews ? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him." 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled , and all Jerusalem with him. 4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people , he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born . 5 They said to him, " In Bethlehem of Judea ; for this is what has been written by the prophet : 6 ' AND YOU, BETHLEHEM , LAND OF JUDAH , ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF JUDAH ; FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME FORTH A RULER WHO WILL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL .' " 7 Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared . 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said , "Go and search carefully for the Child ; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him."

9 After hearing the king , they went their way ; and the star , which they had seen in the east , went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. 10 When they saw the star , they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy . 11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother ; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then , opening their treasures , they presented to Him gifts of gold , frankincense , and myrrh . 12 And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod , the magi left for their own country by another way .

The Slaying of the Infants

13 Now when they had gone , behold , an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said , "Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt , and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him." 14 So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night , and left for Egypt . 15 He remained there until the death of Herod . This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet : " OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED MY SON ."

16 Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi , he became very enraged , and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity , from two years old and under , according to the time which he had determined from the magi . 17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled : 18 " A VOICE WAS HEARD IN RAMAH , WEEPING AND GREAT MOURNING , RACHEL WEEPING FOR HER CHILDREN ; AND SHE REFUSED e TO BE COMFORTED , BECAUSE THEY WERE NO MORE."

19 But when Herod died , behold , an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt , and said , 20 "Get up, take the Child and His mother , and go into the land of Israel ; for those who sought the Child's life are dead ." 21 So Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother , and came into the land of Israel . 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod , he was afraid to go there . Then after being warned by God in a dream , he left for the regions of Galilee , 23 and came and lived in a city called Nazareth . This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets : "He shall be called a Nazarene ."
