The Stages of Israel's Journey

331 Here are the stages in the journey of the Israelites when they came out of Egypt by divisions under the leadership of Moses and Aaron. 2 At the Lord's command Moses recorded the stages in their journey. This is their journey by stages: 3 The Israelites set out from Rameses on the fifteenth day of the first month, the day after the Passover. They marched out defiantly in full view of all the Egyptians, 4 who were burying all their firstborn, whom the Lord had struck down among them; for the Lord had brought judgment on their gods. 5 The Israelites left Rameses and camped at Sukkoth. 6 They left Sukkoth and camped at Etham, on the edge of the desert. 7 They left Etham, turned back to Pi Hahiroth, to the east of Baal Zephon, and camped near Migdol. 8 They left Pi Hahiroth[1] and passed through the sea into the desert, and when they had traveled for three days in the Desert of Etham, they camped at Marah. 9 They left Marah and went to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there. 10 They left Elim and camped by the Red Sea.[2] 11 They left the Red Sea and camped in the Desert of Sin. 12 They left the Desert of Sin and camped at Dophkah. 13 They left Dophkah and camped at Alush. 14 They left Alush and camped at Rephidim, where there was no water for the people to drink. 15 They left Rephidim and camped in the Desert of Sinai. 16 They left the Desert of Sinai and camped at Kibroth Hattaavah. 17 They left Kibroth Hattaavah and camped at Hazeroth. 18 They left Hazeroth and camped at Rithmah. 19 They left Rithmah and camped at Rimmon Perez. 20 They left Rimmon Perez and camped at Libnah. 21 They left Libnah and camped at Rissah. 22 They left Rissah and camped at Kehelathah. 23 They left Kehelathah and camped at Mount Shepher. 24 They left Mount Shepher and camped at Haradah. 25 They left Haradah and camped at Makheloth. 26 They left Makheloth and camped at Tahath. 27 They left Tahath and camped at Terah. 28 They left Terah and camped at Mithkah. 29 They left Mithkah and camped at Hashmonah. 30 They left Hashmonah and camped at Moseroth. 31 They left Moseroth and camped at Bene Jaakan. 32 They left Bene Jaakan and camped at Hor Haggidgad. 33 They left Hor Haggidgad and camped at Jotbathah. 34 They left Jotbathah and camped at Abronah. 35 They left Abronah and camped at Ezion Geber. 36 They left Ezion Geber and camped at Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin. 37 They left Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor, on the border of Edom. 38 At the Lord's command Aaron the priest went up Mount Hor, where he died on the first day of the fifth month of the fortieth year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. 39 Aaron was a hundred and twenty-three years old when he died on Mount Hor. 40 The Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev of Canaan, heard that the Israelites were coming. 41 They left Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah. 42 They left Zalmonah and camped at Punon. 43 They left Punon and camped at Oboth. 44 They left Oboth and camped at Iye Abarim, on the border of Moab. 45 They left Iye Abarim and camped at Dibon Gad. 46 They left Dibon Gad and camped at Almon Diblathaim. 47 They left Almon Diblathaim and camped in the mountains of Abarim, near Nebo. 48 They left the mountains of Abarim and camped on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho. 49 There on the plains of Moab they camped along the Jordan from Beth Jeshimoth to Abel Shittim.

The Stages of Israel's Journey

331 These are the camping sites in the journey of the People of Israel after they left Egypt, deployed militarily under the command of Moses and Aaron. 2 Under God's instruction Moses kept a log of every time they moved, camp by camp: 3 They marched out of Rameses the day after the Passover. It was the fifteenth day of the first month. They marched out heads high and confident. 4 The Egyptians, busy burying their firstborn whom God had killed, watched them go. God had exposed the nonsense of their gods. 5 The People of Israel: left Rameses and camped at Succoth; 6 left Succoth and camped at Etham at the edge of the wilderness; 7 left Etham, circled back to Pi Hahiroth east of Baal Zephon, and camped near Migdol; 8 left Pi Hahiroth and crossed through the Sea into the wilderness; three days into the Wilderness of Etham they camped at Marah; 9 left Marah and came to Elim where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees; they camped there; 10 left Elim and camped by the Red Sea; 11 left the Red Sea and camped in the Wilderness of Sin; 12 left the Wilderness of Sin and camped at Dophkah; 13 left Dophkah and camped at Alush; 14 left Alush and camped at Rephidim where there was no water for the people to drink; 15 left Rephidim and camped in the Wilderness of Sinai; 16 left the Wilderness of Sinai and camped at Kibroth Hattaavah; 17 left Kibroth Hattaavah and camped at Hazeroth; 18 left Hazeroth and camped at Rithmah; 19 left Rithmah and camped at Rimmon Perez; 20 left Rimmon Perez and camped at Libnah; 21 left Libnah and camped at Rissah; 22 left Rissah and camped at Kehelathah; 23 left Kehelathah and camped at Mount Shepher; 24 left Mount Shepher and camped at Haradah; 25 left Haradah and camped at Makheloth; 26 left Makheloth and camped at Tahath; 27 left Tahath and camped at Terah; 28 left Terah and camped at Mithcah; 29 left Mithcah and camped at Hashmonah; 30 left Hashmonah and camped at Moseroth; 31 left Moseroth and camped at Bene Jaakan; 32 left Bene Jaakan and camped at Hor Haggidgad; 33 left Hor Haggidgad and camped at Jotbathah; 34 left Jotbathah and camped at Abronah; 35 left Abronah and camped at Ezion Geber; 36 left Ezion Geber and camped at Kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin. 37 After they left Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor at the border of Edom, 38 Aaron the priest climbed Mount Hor at God's command and died there. It was the first day of the fifth month in the fortieth year after the People of Israel had left Egypt. 39 Aaron was 123 years old when he died on Mount Hor. 40 The Canaanite king of Arad - he ruled in the Negev of Canaan - heard that the People of Israel had arrived. 41 They left Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah; 42 left Zalmonah and camped at Punon; 43 left Punon and camped at Oboth; 44 left Oboth and camped at Iye Abarim on the border of Moab; 45 left Iyim and camped at Dibon Gad; 46 left Dibon Gad and camped at Almon Diblathaim; 47 left Almon Diblathaim and camped in the mountains of Abarim (Across-the-River), within sight of Nebo. 48 After they left the mountains of Abarim they camped on the Plains of Moab at Jordan-Jericho. 49 On the Plains of Moab their camp stretched along the banks of the Jordan from Beth Jeshimoth to Abel Shittim (Acacia Meadow).

The Stages of Israel's Journey

331 These are the journeys of the children of Israel, who went out of the land of Egypt by their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron. 2 Now Moses wrote down the starting points of their journeys at the command of the Lord. And these are their journeys according to their starting points: 3 They departed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the day after the Passover the children of Israel went out with boldness in the sight of all the Egyptians. 4 For the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn, whom the Lord had killed among them. Also on their gods the Lord had executed judgments. 5 Then the children of Israel moved from Rameses and camped at Succoth. 6 They departed from Succoth and camped at Etham, which is on the edge of the wilderness. 7 They moved from Etham and turned back to Pi Hahiroth, which is east of Baal Zephon; and they camped near Migdol. 8 They departed from before Hahiroth and passed through the midst of the sea into the wilderness, went three days' journey in the Wilderness of Etham, and camped at Marah. 9 They moved from Marah and came to Elim. At Elim were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there. 10 They moved from Elim and camped by the Red Sea. 11 They moved from the Red Sea and camped in the Wilderness of Sin. 12 They journeyed from the Wilderness of Sin and camped at Dophkah. 13 They departed from Dophkah and camped at Alush. 14 They moved from Alush and camped at Rephidim, where there was no water for the people to drink. 15 They departed from Rephidim and camped in the Wilderness of Sinai. 16 They moved from the Wilderness of Sinai and camped at Kibroth Hattaavah. 17 They departed from Kibroth Hattaavah and camped at Hazeroth. 18 They departed from Hazeroth and camped at Rithmah. 19 They departed from Rithmah and camped at Rimmon Perez. 20 They departed from Rimmon Perez and camped at Libnah. 21 They moved from Libnah and camped at Rissah. 22 They journeyed from Rissah and camped at Kehelathah. 23 They went from Kehelathah and camped at Mount Shepher. 24 They moved from Mount Shepher and camped at Haradah. 25 They moved from Haradah and camped at Makheloth. 26 They moved from Makheloth and camped at Tahath. 27 They departed from Tahath and camped at Terah. 28 They moved from Terah and camped at Mithkah. 29 They went from Mithkah and camped at Hashmonah. 30 They departed from Hashmonah and camped at Moseroth. 31 They departed from Moseroth and camped at Bene Jaakan. 32 They moved from Bene Jaakan and camped at Hor Hagidgad. 33 They went from Hor Hagidgad and camped at Jotbathah. 34 They moved from Jotbathah and camped at Abronah. 35 They departed from Abronah and camped at Ezion Geber. 36 They moved from Ezion Geber and camped in the Wilderness of Zin, which is Kadesh. 37 They moved from Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor, on the boundary of the land of Edom. 38 Then Aaron the priest went up to Mount Hor at the command of the Lord, and died there in the fortieth year after the children of Israel had come out of the land of Egypt, on the first day of the fifth month. 39 Aaron was one hundred and twenty-three years old when he died on Mount Hor. 40 Now the king of Arad, the Canaanite, who dwelt in the South in the land of Canaan, heard of the coming of the children of Israel. 41 So they departed from Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah. 42 They departed from Zalmonah and camped at Punon. 43 They departed from Punon and camped at Oboth. 44 They departed from Oboth and camped at Ije Abarim, at the border of Moab. 45 They departed from Ijim and camped at Dibon Gad. 46 They moved from Dibon Gad and camped at Almon Diblathaim. 47 They moved from Almon Diblathaim and camped in the mountains of Abarim, before Nebo. 48 They departed from the mountains of Abarim and camped in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho. 49 They camped by the Jordan, from Beth Jesimoth as far as the Abel Acacia Grove in the plains of Moab.

The Stages of Israel's Journey

331 This is the route the Israelites followed as they marched out of Egypt under the leadership of Moses and Aaron. 2 At the Lord 's direction, Moses kept a written record of their progress. These are the stages of their march, identified by the different places where they stopped along the way. 3 They set out from the city of Rameses in early spring-on the fifteenth day of the first month -on the morning after the first Passover celebration. The people of Israel left defiantly, in full view of all the Egyptians. 4 Meanwhile, the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn sons, whom the Lord had killed the night before. The Lord had defeated the gods of Egypt that night with great acts of judgment! 5 After leaving Rameses, the Israelites set up camp at Succoth. 6 Then they left Succoth and camped at Etham on the edge of the wilderness. 7 They left Etham and turned back toward Pi-hahiroth, opposite Baal-zephon, and camped near Migdol. 8 They left Pi-hahiroth and crossed the Red Sea into the wilderness beyond. Then they traveled for three days into the Etham wilderness and camped at Marah. 9 They left Marah and camped at Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees. 10 They left Elim and camped beside the Red Sea. 11 They left the Red Sea and camped in the wilderness of Sin. 12 They left the wilderness of Sin and camped at Dophkah. 13 They left Dophkah and camped at Alush. 14 They left Alush and camped at Rephidim, where there was no water for the people to drink. 15 They left Rephidim and camped in the wilderness of Sinai. 16 They left the wilderness of Sinai and camped at Kibroth-hattaavah. 17 They left Kibroth-hattaavah and camped at Hazeroth. 18 They left Hazeroth and camped at Rithmah. 19 They left Rithmah and camped at Rimmon-perez. 20 They left Rimmon-perez and camped at Libnah. 28 They left Terah and camped at Mithcah. 29 They left Mithcah and camped at Hashmonah. 30 They left Hashmonah and camped at Moseroth. 31 They left Moseroth and camped at Bene-jaakan. 32 They left Bene-jaakan and camped at Hor-haggidgad. 33 They left Hor-haggidgad and camped at Jotbathah. 34 They left Jotbathah and camped at Abronah. 35 They left Abronah and camped at Ezion-geber. 36 They left Ezion-geber and camped at Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin. 37 They left Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor, at the border of Edom. 38 While they were at the foot of Mount Hor, Aaron the priest was directed by the Lord to go up the mountain, and there he died. This happened in midsummer, on the first day of the fifth month of the fortieth year after Israel's departure from Egypt. 39 Aaron was 123 years old when he died there on Mount Hor. 40 At that time the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev in the land of Canaan, heard that the people of Israel were approaching his land. 41 Meanwhile, the Israelites left Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah. 42 Then they left Zalmonah and camped at Punon. 43 They left Punon and camped at Oboth. 44 They left Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim on the border of Moab. 45 They left Iye-abarim and camped at Dibon-gad. 46 They left Dibon-gad and camped at Almon-diblathaim. 47 They left Almon-diblathaim and camped in the mountains east of the river, near Mount Nebo. 48 They left the mountains east of the river and camped on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho. 49 Along the Jordan River they camped from Beth-jeshimoth as far as the meadows of Acacia on the plains of Moab.

Matthew Henry's Commentary on Numbers 33:1-49

Commentary on Numbers 33:1-49

(Read Numbers 33:1-49)

This is a brief review of the travels of the children of Israel through the wilderness. It is a memorable history. In their travels towards Canaan they were continually on the remove. Such is our state in this world; we have here no continuing city, and all our removes in this world are but from one part a desert to another. They were led to and fro, forward and backward, yet were all the while under the direction of the pillar of cloud and fire. God led them about, yet led them the right way. The way God takes in bringing his people to himself is always the best way, though it does not always seem to us the nearest way. Former events are mentioned. Thus we ought to keep in mind the providences of God concerning us and families, us and our land, and the many instances of that Divine care which has led us, and fed us, and kept us all our days hitherto. Few periods of our lives can be thought upon, without reminding us of the Lord's goodness, and our own ingratitude and disobedience: his kindness leaves us without excuse for our sins. We could not wish to travel over again the stages we have passed, unless we could hope, by the grace of God, to shun the sins we then committed, and to embrace such opportunities of doing good as we have let slip. Soon will our wanderings end, and our eternal state be fixed beyond recall; how important then is the present moment! Happy are those whom the Lord now guides with his counsel, and will at length receive to his glory. To this happiness the gospel calls us. Behold now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation. Let sinners seize the opportunity, and flee for refuge to the hope set before them. Let us redeem our time, to glorify God and serve our generation; and he will carry us safely through all, to his eternal kingdom.
