A Prayer for Protection

51 Give ear to my words , O Lord , Consider my groaning . 2 Heed the sound of my cry for help , my King and my God , For to You I pray . 3 In the morning , O Lord , You will hear my voice ; In the morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch . 4 For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness ; No evil dwells with You. 5 The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes ; You hate all who do iniquity . 6 You destroy those who speak falsehood ; The Lord abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit .

7 But as for me, by Your abundant lovingkindness I will enter Your house , At Your holy temple I will bow in reverence for You. 8 O Lord , lead me in Your righteousness because of my foes ; Make Your way straight before me. 9 There is nothing reliable in what they say ; Their inward part is destruction itself. Their throat is an open grave ; They flatter with their tongue . 10 Hold them guilty , O God ; By their own devices let them fall ! In the multitude of their transgressions thrust them out, For they are rebellious against You. 11 But let all who take refuge in You be glad , Let them ever sing for joy ; And may You shelter them, That those who love Your name may exult in You. 12 For it is You who blesses the righteous man , O Lord , You surround him with favor as with a shield .

The Prayer of a Suffering Penitent

381 O Lord , rebuke me not in Your wrath , And chasten me not in Your burning anger . 2 For Your arrows have sunk deep into me, And Your hand has pressed down on me. 3 There is no soundness in my flesh because e of Your indignation ; There is no health in my bones because e of my sin . 4 For my iniquities are gone over my head ; As a heavy burden they weigh too much for me. 5 My wounds grow foul and fester Because e of my folly . 6 I am bent over and greatly bowed down ; I go mourning all day long. 7 For my loins are filled with burning , And there is no soundness in my flesh . 8 I am benumbed and badly crushed ; I groan because of the agitation of my heart . 9 Lord , all my desire is before You; And my sighing is not hidden from You. 10 My heart throbs , my strength fails me; And the light of my eyes , even that has gone from me. 11 My loved ones and my friends stand aloof e from my plague ; And my kinsmen stand afar off.

12 Those who seek my life lay snares for me; And those who seek to injure me have threatened destruction , And they devise treachery all day long. 13 But I, like a deaf man , do not hear ; And I am like a mute man who does not open his mouth . 14 Yes, I am like a man who does not hear , And in whose mouth are no arguments . 15 For I hope in You, O Lord ; You will answer , O Lord my God . 16 For I said , "May they not rejoice over me, Who, when my foot slips , would magnify themselves against me." 17 For I am ready to fall , And my sorrow is continually before me. 18 For I confess my iniquity ; I am full of anxiety because of my sin . 19 But my enemies are vigorous and strong , And many are those who hate me wrongfully . 20 And those who repay evil for good , They oppose me, because I follow what is good . 21 Do not forsake me, O Lord ; O my God , do not be far from me! 22 Make haste to help me, O Lord , my salvation !

A Prayer for Healing

411 How blessed is he who considers the helpless ; The Lord will deliver him in a day of trouble . 2 The Lord will protect him and keep him alive , And he shall be called blessed upon the earth ; And do not give him over to the desire of his enemies . 3 The Lord will sustain him upon his sickbed e ; In his illness , You restore him to health e . 4 As for me, I said , "O Lord , be gracious to me; Heal my soul , for I have sinned against You."

5 My enemies speak evil against me, "When will he die , and his name perish ?" 6 And when he comes to see me, he speaks falsehood ; His heart gathers wickedness to itself; When he goes outside , he tells it. 7 All who hate me whisper together against me; Against me they devise my hurt , saying, 8 "A wicked thing is poured out upon him, That when he lies down , he will not rise up again ." 9 Even my close friend e in whom I trusted , Who ate my bread , Has lifted up his heel against me. 10 But You, O Lord , be gracious to me and raise me up, That I may repay them. 11 By this I know that You are pleased with me, Because my enemy does not shout in triumph over me. 12 As for me, You uphold me in my integrity , And You set me in Your presence forever . 13 Blessed be the Lord , the God of Israel , From everlasting to everlasting . Amen and Amen .

Thirsting for God

421 As the deer pants for the water brooks , So my soul pants for You, O God . 2 My soul thirsts for God , for the living God ; When shall I come and appear before God ? 3 My tears have been my food day and night , While they say to me all day long, "Where is your God ?" 4 These things I remember and I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go along with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God , With the voice of joy and thanksgiving , a multitude keeping festival . 5 Why are you in despair , O my soul ? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God , for I shall again praise Him For the help of His presence .

6 O my God , my soul is in despair within me; Therefore e I remember You from the land of the Jordan And the peaks of Hermon , from Mount Mizar . 7 Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls ; All Your breakers and Your waves have rolled over me. 8 The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime ; And His song will be with me in the night , A prayer to the God of my life . 9 I will say to God my rock , "Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy ?" 10 As a shattering of my bones , my adversaries revile me, While they say to me all day long, "Where is your God ?" 11 Why are you in despair , O my soul ? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God , for I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God .
