The Refuge of the Upright

111 To the choirmaster. Of David. In the Lord I take refuge; how can you say to me, "Flee like a bird to the mountains; 2 for lo, the wicked bend the bow, they have fitted their arrow to the string, to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart; 3 if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do"?

4 The Lord is in his holy temple, the Lord's throne is in heaven; his eyes behold, his eyelids test, the children of men. 5 The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked, and his soul hates him that loves violence. 6 On the wicked he will rain coals of fire and brimstone; a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup. 7 For the Lord is righteous, he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face.

A Morning Prayer of Trust in God

31 A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son. O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; 2 many are saying of me, there is no help for him in God. [Selah] 3 But thou, O Lord, art a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.

4 I cry aloud to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy hill. [Selah] 5 I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the Lord sustains me. 6 I am not afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me round about. 7 Arise, O Lord! Deliver me, O my God! For thou dost smite all my enemies on the cheek, thou dost break the teeth of the wicked. 8 Deliverance belongs to the Lord; thy blessing be upon thy people! [Selah]
