19¹ Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

² Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.

³ The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the Lord.

⁴ Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished, [1] and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.

⁶ Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him [2] that giveth gifts. ⁷ All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.

⁸ He that getteth wisdom [3] loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

¹⁰ Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.

¹¹ The discretion [4] of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

¹² The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

¹⁴ House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the Lord.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

¹⁶ He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die.

¹⁷ He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

¹⁸ Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

¹⁹ A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.

²⁰ Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

²¹ There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.

²² The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

²³ The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

²⁴ A slothful man hideth his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

²⁵ Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: [5] and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

²⁶ He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

²⁷ Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.

²⁸ An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.

²⁹ Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

Exhortations to Obedience

3¹ My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: ² For length of days, and long [6] life, and peace, shall they add to thee. ³ Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: ⁴ So shalt thou find favour and good [7] understanding in the sight of God and man. ⁵ Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. ⁶ In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

⁷ Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. ⁸ It shall be health [8] to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. ⁹ Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: ¹⁰ So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. ¹¹ My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: ¹² For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

¹³ Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. ¹⁴ For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. ¹⁵ She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. ¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. ¹⁷ Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. ¹⁸ She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. ¹⁹ The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established [9] the heavens. ²⁰ By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.

²¹ My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: ²² So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. ²³ Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. ²⁴ When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. ²⁵ Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. ²⁶ For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

²⁷ Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. ²⁸ Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee. ²⁹ Devise [10] not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee. ³⁰ Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm. ³¹ Envy thou not the oppressor, [11] and choose none of his ways. ³² For the froward is abomination to the Lord: but his secret is with the righteous. ³³ The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just. ³⁴ Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly. ³⁵ The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
