17¹ Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices [1] with strife.

² A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

³ The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts.

⁴ A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.

⁵ Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished. [2]

⁶ Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

⁷ Excellent [3] speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.

⁸ A gift is as a precious [4] stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

⁹ He that covereth a transgression seeketh [5] love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.

¹⁰ A reproof entereth [6] more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.

¹¹ An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

¹² Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.

¹³ Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

¹⁴ The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

¹⁵ He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord.

¹⁶ Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?

¹⁷ A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

¹⁸ A man void of understanding [7] striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.

¹⁹ He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.

²⁰ He that hath a froward [8] heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

²¹ He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.

²² A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

²³ A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.

²⁴ Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

²⁵ A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.

²⁶ Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.

²⁷ He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man [9] of understanding is of an excellent spirit. ²⁸ Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

Exhortations to Obedience

3¹ My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: ² For length of days, and long [10] life, and peace, shall they add to thee. ³ Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: ⁴ So shalt thou find favour and good [11] understanding in the sight of God and man. ⁵ Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. ⁶ In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

⁷ Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. ⁸ It shall be health [12] to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. ⁹ Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: ¹⁰ So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. ¹¹ My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: ¹² For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

¹³ Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. ¹⁴ For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. ¹⁵ She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. ¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. ¹⁷ Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. ¹⁸ She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. ¹⁹ The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established [13] the heavens. ²⁰ By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.

²¹ My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: ²² So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. ²³ Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. ²⁴ When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. ²⁵ Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. ²⁶ For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

²⁷ Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. ²⁸ Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee. ²⁹ Devise [14] not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee. ³⁰ Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm. ³¹ Envy thou not the oppressor, [15] and choose none of his ways. ³² For the froward is abomination to the Lord: but his secret is with the righteous. ³³ The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just. ³⁴ Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly. ³⁵ The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
