In this chapter, I’m noticing a lot of wisdom on watching your words. In this day and age where the vast majority expresses their opinion openly, it’s becoming more and more difficult to “think before you speak.” ESPECIALLY, online where we make comments without running the risk of consequence for our actions.
During election time, everyone was a political expert: Republicans vs. Democrats, Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice, Hetero-Marriage vs. Gay-Marriage. It never ends. These are all issues that we need to have an opinion about, right? Never mind the fact that many of us don’t really know that much about these issues; that we’re reliant upon the research of other people in determining which side we choose. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube… all of them absolutely overflowing with comments that will probably never be read. Yet we comment anyway because… WHY?!?!
Here’s my point: Proverbs 15 instructs us to refrain from harsh words but to speak gently, have cool tempers and to choose our words wisely. We are told that it’s okay to respond, but to do it gently. I don’t know about you, but I don’t see nearly enough of that these days.
Today, I’d like to encourage us all to analyze our social media lifestyle. When we comment on news articles and our friend’s political posts, are we doing so in a way that is humble and full of substance? Or are we just repeating the perspectives of those we respect while using a tone that is not portraying godliness?
