Wisdom vs. Folly: Proverbs 9

Proverbs 9:1

So, yeah… I know we aren’t seeing anything new here.  We’ve seen these analogies in previous chapters, right? But one thing that stuck out to me in this chapter is that there are a lot of similarities between Wisdom and Folly.

They are both throwing themselves at those of us who are simple and those who lack sense. So each are available to all of us. Both sit in “the high places in town,” so they are equally accessible to all of us. The difference is in what they are offering and the type of life that results in following each of them.

Wisdom offers insight and multiplication of days while folly offers material things such as sweet water and bread that belong just to us, which lead us to hell. I take this as another way of saying that we need to chase after insight and not just stuff.

There’s also a little gem of wisdom in this chapter:

Whoever corrects a scoffer gets abuse, and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury. 8 Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you. 9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

What is a scoffer? They are conceited people who mock others. Wisdom tells us to not waste our time trying to correct these people or offer them instructions because they won’t appreciate what you are doing for them. It’s little things like these that God expects us to read and apply to our lives; things that should become reflex reactions to every day situations.
