The Infamous Harlot/Seductress: Proverbs 7

Proverbs 7:1

It seems adultery hasn’t changed much over the past few thousand years. This chapter sounds like something straight out of a movie or something. If we pay attention, we can learn something that will change our lives forever.

First of all, the young man who falls prey to this seductress “lacks sense” or I guess you could say he doesn’t follow the knowledge or wisdom of God. He clearly isn’t prepared for what he is about to encounter.

The seductress has the following characteristics:

·       dresses scantily

·       bold

·       boisterous

·       rebellious

·       doesn’t remain home

·       deceitful

·       liar

To me, the most graphic part of this whole chapter is “he follows her like an ox to the slaughter.” I mean, this guy is willfully following someone to his death. How dumb! Obviously, he should turn the other way, right?

But it isn’t always that easy, is it, guys? Lust comes on subtly. Everywhere we turn, it seems we find this same “harlot” in advertisements or, most specifically, pornography. We’re actually passing by the street on her corner right now. After all, there’s a porn site just a hop, skip & a jump away from this website. It’s free sex and seems consequence-free, but believe me when I say that it’s no different than what is being talked about in the chapter we just read.

I pray that God will help us all not fall prey to lust. Instead, let us take this wisdom and bind it on our hearts so that we will be able to do what is right during times of temptation.

In other words, help us not be a bunch of big, dumb oxen…
