James Edmeston was born. An architect, he also wrote over 2,000 hymns, among which were "Savior, Breathe an Evening Blessing" and "Lead Us, Heavenly Father, Lead Us."
Birth of Joseph Medlicott Scriven at Seapatrick, County Down, Ireland. In his pursuit of an army career, his health forced him to give up his military ambitions. He was engaged to be married, but his bride-to-be was drowned the night before the wedding. He moved to Canada in 1844. There, some time later, he was again engaged to be married, but the young lady died after a short illness just before the wedding date. As a member of the Plymouth Brethren,Scriven devoted much time to humanitarian service without remuneration. In his later years he suffered physically and financially, with periods of deep depression. Yet he gave us the beloved hymn, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus."
Marvin R. Vincent was born in Poughkeepsie, New York. He entered the ministry in 1860 and three years later was ordained into the Presbyterian church. After holding two New York pastorates, he began teaching at Union Theological Seminary. Vincent is remembered for his four-volume set of Greek Word Studies in the New Testament. He also wrote commentaries on Philippians and Philemon for the International Critical Commentary.
