Henry Martyn (1781 to 1812)
Church of England
"Now Let Me Burn out for God"

Henry Martyn was born in Cornwall, England. He became an Anglican missionary to India and Turkey. Martyn first sailed to India in 1805 as a chaplain for the East India Company, leaving behind a girlfriend who refused mission work. He said, "Now let me burn out for God." His outstanding linguistic gifts eventually led him into one of his greatest tasks, the translation of the New Testament into Hindustani. By February, 1812, he had also completed translations of the New Testament in Arabic and Persian. Suffering from tuberculosis, he died at age 31.
