Recognizing the risen Christ (Luke 24 v 13-35)

It had already been an unforgettable day for two friends of the crucified Jesus. But as they went for a walk that afternoon,
their day was about to become a whole lot more memorable…

We need to talk
Read Luke 24:13

• What are this duo doing (v 13-14)?
• As they meet a stranger on the road, how do they sum up what's been going on (v 17-24)?
• What is their mood in v 17? What does this tell us about their view of the women's claim that Jesus was alive?

Their physical inability to recognise Jesus as He walks alongside them is a picture of their spiritual inability to recognise Jesus as the risen Christ, the one who really will “redeem Israel” (v 21).

You need to understand
Read Luke 24:25

• What's their problem, does Jesus say (v 25)?
• How does Jesus begin to reveal Himself to them (v 26-27)?

..............................................
TIME OUT
• What does v 27 tell us about what the Old Testament (the “Scriptures”) is all about?
• How should this shape our reading of the Bible? Who will the main thrust of any Bible text always be about? "
..............................................

It must have been the most amazing Bible study ever! But this pair still don't understand. In kindness, but not in
recognition, they invite Jesus in to stay with them (v 28-29).

• What is it that opens their eyes to recognise the risen Jesus (v 30-31)?
• When was the last time Jesus had done this (see Luke 22 v 14-19)?

The word of God written in the Bible and the word of God made visible in the Lord's Supper: that's how they come to recognise Jesus for who He truly is. We, just like these two followers, need to feast regularly on the Bible and on the Lord's
Supper, to prevent us from being “foolish” (v 25) and to enable us to keep knowing Jesus as our Risen Redeemer.

We’ve seen Him!
Read Luke 24:32

• What additional confirmation do they receive of Jesus' resurrection (v 34)?
..............................................
PRAY
Thank God for His written word and His visible word. Thank Him that they both reveal His suffering, glorified Christ.
Thank God that through His Spirit, Jesus opens the Scriptures to you.
Ask God to give you the privilege of a heart which burns with excitement as you read the Bible each day.
