The Priest who Saved the Nation
Dr. Randy White
"Then all the assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And Jehoiada said to them, “Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as the Lord has spoken concerning the sons of David." (2 Chronicles 23:3, NASB95)
In wicked days of Judah’s history, the Queen mother, Athaliah, took over the throne upon the death of her son. This sweet woman had her grandchildren killed in order to secure her own spot as the royal regent of Israel. Her desire had satanic roots—Satan has always worked to erase the line of David from the face of the earth because it is through that line that salvation would come to the world. Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, was the perfect servant to carry out the task.
But a priest named Jehoida saved the day. This priest rescued the infant Joash from his grandmother’s wrath and hid him in the temple of God for six years until the moment was right to bring the young child forth and crown him King. After crowned King, Jehoida remained as a faithful servant to Joash and mentored him to be one of the good Kings of Judah.
In the 1930’s a few pastors—like Deitrich Bonhoeffer and Martin Niemöller—began to warn Germany about the troubles to come. Unfortunately, the bulk of the church refused to listen, and was swept away by the man who would bring back the glory of Germany. Six million Jews and countless others died as a result. Bonhoeffer lost his life for his stand, Martin Niemöller escaped with his.
Praise God for Priests like Jehoiada and pastors like Bonhoeffer and Niemöller. Pray for you Pastor today…that he may have such boldness!
