A Priest with Backbone
“When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he arose from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand; and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and pierced both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman, through the body. So the plague on the sons of Israel was checked.” (Numbers 25:7–8, NASB95)
Phinehas, grandson of Aaron, was incensed when some of the Israelite men were “playing the harlot” with the Moabite women. God was incensed as well. In fact, God had sent a plague on Israel because of this, and 24,000 men died. Moses gave the Israelite men a cease and desist order, but one arrogant young Israeli named Zimri blatantly disobeyed and flaunted his disobedience to all. Phenehas was fed up and slew Zimri and his companion.
And God cheered! In fact, God was so pleased that He promised Phinehas and his descendants a perpetual Priesthood, “because he was jealous for his God” (Numbers 25:13). This perpetual priesthood is not fulfilled in Jesus as the Priest after the order of Melchizadek, because Jesus is of the tribe of Judah, not of Levi. The promise will be fulfilled in the future Kingdom when Christ reigns as King and the descendants of Phenehas serve in the Millennial temple.
Praise God for a priest with backbone!
