Doing God's Work in Man's Name

"'...We will go up to the place which the Lord has promised.' But Moses said, 'Why then are you transgressing the commandment of the Lord, when it will not succeed?'" (Numbers 14:40-41, NASB95)

After God's judgment came upon the Israelites, that they would spend 40 years in the wilderness, the nation decided it needed to repent and do what God had originally instructed.  The problem is that the opportunity had passed, and it was too late for the people to change their mind and be obedient to God.

It is serious business when you reject God's will and way.  While we may call God a God of second chances, there is a bedrock truth that God's judgments are sure and eternal.

In the wilderness, having decided they would go into the Promised Land after all, Moses declared that they would surely fail.  Having already ignored God, now they ignored their leader as well.  They ventured forth to do God's work in man's name.  Such a plan never works.

How often do you venture forth to do something for God when God has not intitiated nor approved the work?  Perhaps this describes much of the work of the church today.

In His Grace;
